Explanation of Responses:

1. On March 15, 2021, the reporting person elected to transfer all of his holdings in The Hartford Stock Fund (the "Fund") under the Company's 401(k) plan into other available alternatives within the 401(k) plan.

2. Prior beneficial ownership reports inadvertently reported the number of Fund units owned by the reporting person (3,267.7692) rather than the approximate share equivalents (961.006181). The Fund consists of Company common stock (typically 99% of the Fund value) and short-term investments (typically less than 1% of the Fund value) and the number of share equivalents varies depending on the performance of the Company, the overall stock market, the amount of cash awaiting investment, and the performance and amount of short-term investments held by the fund, less any expense accrued against the fund. As a result of the transaction reported on this Form 4, the reporting person has completely withdrawn from the Fund.

3. The options became fully exercisable on March 3, 2018, the third anniversary of the grant date.

4. The options became fully exercisable on March 1, 2019, the third anniversary of the grant date.

5. The options became fully exercisable on February 28, 2020, the third anniversary of the grant date.

6. One-third of the options became exercisable on February 26, 2020, an additional one-third of the options became exercisable on February 26, 2021 and the remaining one-third of the options will become exercisable on February 26, 2022, the third anniversary of the grant date.

7. One-third of the options will become exercisable on February 23, 2022, an additional one-third of the options will become exercisable on February 23, 2023 and the remaining one-third of the options will become exercisable on February 23, 2024, the third anniversary of the grant date.

8. The options became fully exercisable on February 27, 2021, the third anniversary of the grant date.

9. One-third of the options became exercisable on February 25, 2021, an additional one-third of the options will become exercisable on February 25, 2022 and the remaining one-third of the options will become exercisable on February 25, 2023, the third anniversary of the grant date.
